Titel, kandidatafhandling: ”At være vågen og oralt intuberet – En kvalitativ interviewundersøgelse af intensivpatientens respiratoroplevelse”

Abstract
Title: Being awake and orally intubated – A qualitative interview study of the ICU patient’s mechanical ventilator experience.
Background: A structured literature review shows that we are in a time of change in the intensive care unit. A modified sedation strategy has lead to awake ventilatorpatients, but there are only few studies that illuminate the experience of being awake and orally intubated during ventilator treatment. The aim of this thesis is to seek insight into this experience.
Method: The methodological framework is phenomenological-hermeneutic, and a qualitative approach is used. Data are collected through semi-structured interviews, and then analyzed through a Ricoeur-inspired structural analysis.
Findings: There are three themes with associated sub-themes. 1) The tube in the throat, including: The foreign object in mouth and throat, Alternative communication, Trust in health professionals and Liberation from the tube. 2) Being conscious, but doped, including: The surreal consciousness, Gaps in memory and Consciousness of life. 3) When time feels long, including: The slow time and Relations in time.
Conclusion: The thesis findings contribute to new knowledge about the awake, orally intubated respiratory patient's life-world, and that this makes new demands on intensive care nursing.
