Masterdegree, titel: Begrensning av livsforlengende behandling til sederte intensivpasienter på respirator- hva er intensivsykepleierens rolle?
PhD stipendiat i pågående forskningsprosjekt: A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of nurse led follow up after being a patient in the intensive care unit
Patients report unpleasant memories after a stay at an intensive care unit (ICU). Prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) is 19-33%, anxiety symptoms 23-48% and depression 17-43%. Little research is done to help patients to cope with the consequences of an ICU stay. The aims of this study are to measure the effect of a goal directed nurse led intervention to reduce PTSS, increase sense of coherence and quality of life (QOL) the first year after discharge from the ICU. In addition, anxiety, depression, hope, pain, and work participation will be examined.
250 patients (18 years) admitted to an ICU for >24 hours will be randomized to an intervention or control group after being screened for PTSS. Those with a low PTSS will not be randomized, but be included in an observation group. The intervention will be conducted 3 times, at the ward after discharge from the ICU, and one and two months after discharge. The intervention is follow-up talks with a critical care nurse to help the patient to process traumatic memories and construct a coherent and meaningful narrative from the ICU stay. Information about what happened during the stay is given, and a goal is to integrate this with the patients’ own memories. All patients will fill in questionnaires at baseline (before the randomization), 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge.
