Abstract Music therapy - A study of sedated mechanically ventilated intensive care patientsThe aim of this study was to investigate which effect music therapy has in the physiological variables heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation in five sedated intensive care patients who were on mechanical ventilation for at least 48 hours. The aim was also to observe the patients physical reactions such as facial expressions movements, motoric and state of relaxation. Further on the aim was to evaluate if the method in this study would be possible to perform and if it could be applied in a larger study. The method of triangulated design was applied. Repeated measures of physiological variables and observations of the patients were registered. The results show that the variables heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and mean blood pressure had a variation during the intervention and had a tendency to be reduced after 30 minutes. The reductions last ten minutes after the end of the music therapy. Respiratory rate and oxygen saturation was not affected. The findings suggest the need of using the method in a larger study. | Notes: A study in co-operation with Denmark and Norway will begin in September 2004. Totally 150 patients will be included in the study, 50 of the patients from the postoperative section in Malmoe, Sweden. After surgery, all of the patients both listen to especially designed music and to the base sound in the postoperative section. This means that each patient is his own control. The aim of the study is that the patients experience a well being when they listen to especially designed music compared to when they listen to the base sound. |
